S is for…

S is for…Spelling. Some children find spelling easy; others have to work really hard at it. If this is you – don’t worry. First of all, remember what we said about improvement. If you get 0 out of 10 for your spellings each week, then aim to get just one right next week. Then aim for 2 out of 10, then 3 out of 10 and so on.

So, how can you learn your spellings? The method that most people use is called Look Cover Write Check. First of all look at the word really carefully. Notice the shape of it – how many letters have ascenders (sticks going up like in b and h) or descenders (sticks going down like in g and p). Notice which letters make each sound (is it ee ea or ie). Close your eyes and try to see the word in your head. Now cover the word and then write it. Check it to see if you got it right. If you did then give yourself a pat on the back. If you didn’t, have a look at the part you got wrong and then try cover, write, check again.

Hopefully this will work for you and you will start to improve at your spellings. If it doesn’t work – don’t worry! It just means that you learn in a different way to other people. Ask an adult to read A Multi-Sensory Approach to Spelling with you and try some of the ideas there instead.
